The town was founded in 1879 and named after the island of Iona in Scotland. The economy of Iona is primarily based on agriculture, with corn and soybeans being the main crops grown in the area. The town has one school, Iona Public School, which serves students in grades K-8. High school students in the area attend school in nearby Slayton.
